Engine Company and Fire Police Respond to Shed Fire on Harwood Road

July 5th, 2021

Just after 2:30pm, the Luzerne County Communications Center dispatched Hazle Townshsip and Harwood Fire Companies to 1163 Harwood Road for a possible shed on fire.  Hazle Township Chief 3 arrived in the area, with smoke showing from the detached shed, and upgraded the box to a working fire. Hazle Township Engine 3 arrived and placed an inch and three quarter handline in service.  Harwood Engine 1 arrived next and supplied Hazle Engine 3.  Crews made quick work of the fire and cleared the scene within 30 minutes.  Harwood Fire Police controlled traffic on Harwood Road during the incident.

ELEVATED FIRE RISK FOR MONDAY, APRIL 5, 2021

Increased Fire Danger Monday and Tuesday!
 

Fire danger increases this afternoon as winds gust to around 20-25mph and relative humidity falls. The combination of warm temperatures, gusty winds, and low humidity will make for favorable conditions for fire ignition and fire spread Monday afternoon into early evening.

Use caution if handling any potential ignition sources and please refrain from any outdoor burning.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING

ON THE PROPSOSED FINANCING BY Harwood Fire Company

​

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN the Harwood Fire Company located in Hazle Township, Pennsylvania (the issuer), will allow for public comment on Saturday, March 27, 2021, at 1:00pm, via following: local phone number (570)-454-5777, for the purpose of holding a public hearing pursuant to the requirements of Section 147(f) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended, on a proposal the Issuer enter into an agreement to finance certain equipment. The equipment finance consists of One (1) New Chevrolet 1500 Truck with Emergency Upfitting and will be maintained at the fire station in Hazle Township, Pennsylvania. 

To finance the costs of such equipment and to pay costs and expenses incidental to the financing, the Issuer proposes to enter into a loan agreement with a maximum aggregate principal amount not to exceed $44,244.46.  The Issuer will be required to pay all taxes on the equipment. The rental payments due pursuant to the loan agreement will be secured by a security interest in the equipment. 

All persons interested may phone in and be heard at said time and place or may file written comments with the Harwood Fire Company prior to the date of the hearing set forth heretofore.

Tanker Responds to Early Morning 2 Alarm Blaze in Ringtown, Schuylkill County

Just after 0500 hours on March 23, 2021, Luzerne County Communications dispatched Harwood, Hazle and Sugarloaf Township Tankers to respond to 146 W. Main Street, Ringtown, Schuylkill County, for a 2nd alarm structure fire.  Tanker 241 responded with Chief 1 (Naprava) and arrived to be placed into staging.  Out of County tankers were released after approximately one half hour while numerous Schuylkill County units remained on scene.

Tanker Responds to Working Fire in Green Ridge Section of the Township

March 15, 2021

​

Just after 1700 hours on March 15, 2021, Hazle Township and Harwood Volunteers were alerted of a house fire at 601 W. Green Street in the Township. Hazle Engine 2 would 

arrive to find a working fire in the attic of multi-family duplex. The Engine crew would stretch (1) 1.75” hand line and quickly control the fire holding it to the room of origin. Hazle Ladder 4 would perform the first due truck responsibilities. West Hazleton 183-E1 completed the water supply laying a supply line from 141-E2 to the hydrant at Winters Avenue and Yuknis Street. Hazleton City 139-E2 had the RIT assignment. Crews operated for a little over an hour before being placed inservice. Hazle Chief 1 (KOSTICIAN) had the command on West Green Street. 116-E2 and 136-L1 were relocated to Station 1 to provide coverage while crews operated.

Funeral Arrangements for

 President and Fire Police Captain

Jonathan Sonntag

March 11, 2021

Arraignments for our brother, Jonathan, are as follows:
 

This Sunday, March 14, 1100-1300 will be the viewing at Moran's Funeral Home located at 229 W. 12th St, Hazleton.

Friends and the fire and EMS family are invited to attend in apparatus and uniform to bid a final farewell to Jonathan.

Following the conclusion of the viewing, a procession will take place from Moran's Funeral Home to the Harwood Fire Company located at 874 Old St, Harwood Mines, Hazle Twp and will end in a short final send-off there.

Passing of President and Fire Police Captain Jonathan Sonntag

March 9, 2021

It is with deepest regret that the Officers of the Harwood Fire Company announce the passing of President and Fire Police Captain Jonathan Edward Sonntag. Jon succumbed to an acute illness at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest, today at 4:35pm. Forever in our hearts and always in our thoughts. You will be missed the world over.

2 pinned in I-81 Crash

January 31, 2021

Hazle Twp Fire/Rescue, Harwood and Sugarloaf Rescue, along with Greater Hazleton EMS, Medic 11, and Valley Regional EMS worked to extricate 2 patients trapped in their vehicle after colliding with a tractor trailer on Interstate 81 northbound at the Exit 143 exit ramp. The patients' vehicle came to rest under the overturned trailer. Crews employed a heavy wrecker from a local tow agency to aid in patient extrication.
 

Shortly after clearing the interstate incident, Harwood and Hazle Twp were dispatched to a vehicle into a tree and down an embankment on the CanDo Expressway. Harwood engine quickly made the nearby scene and determined that the driver was uninjured. The scene was taken by PSP and all units cleared.
